With all of these beautiful ideas, hopefully we all will be inspired to start a little earlier this year!  If you have some fantastic gift wrapping ideas, please leave a link to your post in the comments section.  I'd love to check it out and share it!

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Who's getting excited for Thanksgiving?  What's your favorite dish?  Are you a turkey lover or is it all about the sides for you?  I'm definitely a sides kind of gal, but I also love dessert, of course.  We are going to my mom's house, about 45 minutes away, for Thanksgiving lunch with her family.  We will come back home that evening to host dinner for my hubby's family.  Since I'll be gone most of the morning and afternoon, I looked for dishes that I could make ahead.  Here are the dishes we'll be serving, along with links for many of the dishes.

{Favorite Finds} Interview with Christie Leigh Mueller of SouthernLeague Magazine

Monday, November 19, 2012

One of the best parts of blogging is all the generous, fascinating people I've met through this adventure.  So many creative, sweet, and all together fabulous people hang out online.  One such person I've had the pleasure of getting to know a little bit is Christie Leigh Mueller.  Christie Leigh authored GridIron Belles: A Guide to Saturdays in Dixie.  Plus, she's a Kentucky girl, so that automatically makes her alright to me!

And, now Christie Leigh has launched her new venture, SouthernLeague Magazine, a magazine dedicated to sport, culture, and style. SouthernLeague Magazine and its website embody its mantra: "SoLeagueMag is defining the culture & style surrounding the co-eds and young professionals of the South. Play hard. Work harder. Look good while doing it."

Christie Leigh has answered a few questions to help you achieve that SouthernLeague style:

1.) Where did you find inspiration for the magazine?

SouthernLeague was created because I could never understand why people settled for ordinary when extraordinary was just a little hard work away.

Spending my time around SEC stadiums, universities, and cultures, I realized there is a new South. There is a new wave of drive from the current college co-eds and the recent graduates. I wanted to create a source where young people could turn to to be inspired to still have a great time but see how success is just at their finger tips. And, of course, it never hurts to look good while you’re playing or working!

2.) Can you give readers any tips for creating their own signature southern style?

Sometimes in the South we get caught up in fitting into the Southern mold of old rules or current trends. The key to a signature style is assembling pieces that make you feel like you can take on the world, turn heads, or attend an impromptu party. Find out what you feel good in and then make it unique!

3.) Out of all the beautiful photos in the magazine, which was your favorite?

How to pick just one! I’d have to say the handstand photo we took at the photoshoot in Athens, GA. To me, it screams fun. Our big thing at SouthernLeague is to play hard, work harder, and look good while doing it. Which is everything that is captured in this photo—life is meant to be enjoyed.

4.) What is your favorite southern dessert?

Being from Kentucky, I have a soft spot for Derby Pie. Pecans, chocolate, butter, and bourbon—what else is there to love in a dessert? Generally speaking, I enjoy anything that comes from a tattered recipe card that has been passed down through generations.

5.) What do you enjoy most about creating each edition of SouthernLeague?

I love putting together all of the unique stories of Southern culture I’ve collected throughout the year into a piece of art. I’m fortunate to meet thousands of people while on the road, all who have a different perspective and style of life which influences what we put forward as SouthernLeague.

Thank you so much for stopping by, Christie Leigh.  Want to be inspired?  Then, make sure you check out the lovely SouthernLeague Magazine

{Crafts} Felt Owl Utensil Holder

Saturday, November 17, 2012

Whooo’s ready for Thanksgiving?  Last night, we finalized our Thanksgiving menu and now I can’t wait!  We’ll be at my mom’s house for lunch, then rush back to our house to prepare dinner for my husband’s family. To make it a little less hectic, I’m now getting all of my Thanksgiving crafts and decorations ready so next week can be dedicated to cooking!

I recently shared how to make cute little acorn owls for your Thanksgiving kids table over at the The Celebration Shoppe.  If you made those owls, then you probably have some left-over felt.  I have another Thanksgiving craft for you that also uses felt.

For the Thanksgiving kids’ table this year, I designed FREE printable owl utensil holders, that are downloadable HERE.  If you’re feeling extra crafty, you could make this felt version of the utensil holders.  Unlike the paper utensil holders, the felt ones will hold up for multiple Thanksgivings.  They’ll also be a welcomed guest year after year at your kids table!

Here’s what you’ll need:

1. Using the free owl utensil holder template, cut out each of the shapes in felt. I simply cut out the paper shapes, traced them onto the felt, then cut out the shapes.

2. You should have three sizes of circles for the eyes. Starting with the smallest circle, stitch it to the next biggest circle. Repeat, until you’ve stitched all three circles together.

3. Stitch the eyes to the owl’s head. Glue the triangle nose to the head, under the eyes.

4. Stitch the wings to either side of the front of the owl’s body.

5. Stitch the head of the owl to the front of the body.

6. Finally, stack the front of the body on top of the back and stitch the two pieces together. You want to wait to attach the back of the body until the all of the front has been stitched, so you don’t stitch closed the back.

{Recipes} -- Pumpkin Stack Cake with Cinnamon Whipped Cream

Thursday, November 15, 2012

This may be my new favorite way to have pumpkin.  Yes, that's a big statement, but this cake is lick-your-plate-clean good!  Stack cakes are traditionally made with apples; but, I wanted to experiment with pumpkin for Thanksgiving.   I combined a few recipes I found to make this towering stack of pumpkin goodness.

Never tasted a stack cake before?  Apple stack cakes are an Appalachian dessert staple.  If you want to read more about these cakes, the cult worthy BraveTart wrote a fascinating piece on the dessert for Gilt Taste.  Stack cakes are not perfect, delicate beauties.  Its their rustic imperfections that make them so appealing.   Take a close look at this Pumpkin Stack Cake.  No, really, look closely.  The layers are not even, pumpkin butter is spilling out the sides, crumbs are falling off of it, but once you take a bite of it, none of that matters.

And, if you decide to try a pumpkin stack cake for your Thanksgiving meal, whatever you do, do not skip the Cinnamon Whipped Cream! In fact, I'm going to whip up a double batch of it to top pretty much any dessert I eat this Thanksgiving.

Pumpkin Stack Cake

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
3/4 cups butter, softened to room temperature
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 large (29 ounce) can of canned pumpkin
3 cups of Pumpkin Butter (recipe for homemade pumpkin butter, here)
Cinnamon Whipped Cream (recipe below)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  This cake can be prepared using three 9 inch cake pans.  For a smaller, but taller cake, like in the above picture, use six 6 inch pans.  Line pans with parchment paper and lightly grease.

Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground cloves in a medium bowl.  Set aside.

Cream butter and sugars together using a mixer.  Add one egg at a time, combining completely after each one.  Add vanilla extract and canned pumpkin, beat on low for about one minute.   With mixer on low, slowly add flour to pumpkin mixture.  Continue mixing on low until fully combined.

Pour equal amounts into each pan, spreading evenly.  (For the 6 inch round cake, if you only have three 6 inch pans, bake half of the batter in those three pans.  After baking, remove cakes, then bake the other half of the batter.)  Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cakes comes out clean, about 30 minutes.   Cool on a wire rack.  Remove cakes from pans and cool.

To Finish:  Before stacking, you may need to cut the tops of the cakes so that they are level.  However, leave one cake layer uncut, for the top layer.  Place bottom layer on cake stand.   Spread about ½ cup of pumpkin butter over layer.  Stack next layer on top, repeat until you’ve reached the final layer.
Serve with Cinnamon Whipped Cream.

Cinnamon Whipped Cream: Add 2 cups whipping cream, 3/4 cups confectioners' sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon vanilla to mixing bowl.  Mix just until stiff peaks form.  Refrigerate until serving time.

{Mirabelle Creations Party} - Eat, Drink, & Be Thankful Thanksgiving Tablescape Ideas

Monday, November 12, 2012

For the adult table Thanksgiving tablescape, I wanted to create a rustic, glam look that coordinates with the Thanksgiving Dessert Table.  I found some rustic elements, like the burlap table cloth, jute napkin tie, and woven charger, then paired them with more glamorous items, like the gold turkey and red roses.  You can find all the details of the tablescape after the pictures.

{Tablescape Details} The table was first covered with burlap.  The, a gold fabric table runner was laid down the center. Instead of a large centerpiece, red garden roses in small vases and mason jars decorated with gold paint sit down the center of the table. Spray painted ceramic turkeys and mini pumpkins embellish the table. At each place setting, a red Spode plate sits atop woven charger plates. The white linen napkins are tied with jute twine that was adorned with gold acorns.

The place cards at each place setting coordinate with the cards used for the Dessert Table.  The place cards are part of the Eat, Drink, & Be Thankful Printable Party Collection.  When I styled the table, I used my best friend's name for the placesetting.  She lives out in California and she is the guest I'd most like to have at my Thanksgiving table.  Since I took this picture, she has welcomed her first child!  Now even more than ever before, I wish I could spend Thanksgiving with her and her precious little boy!

Who would you love to spend Thanksgiving with this year?

{Mirabelle Creations Party} -- Eat, Drink, & Be Thankful Kids' Table + Free Printables

Friday, November 9, 2012

This Thanksgiving kids' table was styled for the November issue of TOPS in Lex magazine.  I had two little helpers who were happy to do a test fun for our actual Thanksgiving kids table.  They were more than thankful for all the fun activities at the table!  For all the little details, please scroll down.  And, don't forget to click on the links for links to the FREE printable items!

{Kids Table}  I first started by designing a printable collection which coordinates with the Eat, Drink, & Be Thankful Dessert Table printables. Even though the kids’ table incorporates the same colors and patterns, it’s not just a pint size version of the adult table. Fun touches at each place setting will keep the kids busy throughout Thanksgiving dinner.

Owl Coloring Sheets served as place mats at each place setting.  The coloring pages were topped with an orange plate and fabric napkin. The napkins were tied with a paper leaf and mini acorn owl made using felt. I shared the details for making these sweet little owls on the The Celebration Shoppe earlier this week. Another fun little owl serves as a Utensil Holder.  Kids will be able to easily find their place setting with Whooo's Thankful? Fancy Labels.

Beside each plate, I also placed crayons and a little composition notebook that was covered with paper and a printable party circle.  The notebooks provide a place for the kids to doodle and write notes. Another activity for the kids is the Thankfulness Tree.  They can write what they are thankful for on printable leaves that coordinate with the Thanksgiving Party Printable Collection

Other decorations for the table included a white ceramic owl, banners on the back of the chairs, and a table topper made from kraft paper, lined with ribbon for a pop of color.  The table topper not only keeps the white tablecloth clean, kids can also color on it.

While I photographed them, my kids loved playing with the little mini owls. And, after I finished taking the pictures, they even sat at the table for a long time coloring, playing, and filling out their leaves for the Thankfulness Tree.  They definitely approved of the set-up!

Don't for get to download your FREE printables at the links above.  And, you can get the entire Thanksgiving Collection for only $12, HERE!

{Mirabelle Creations Party} -- "Eat, Drink, & Be Thankful" Thanksgiving Dessert Table

Monday, November 5, 2012

Earlier this fall, we hosted a autumn get-together for friends and their families. It was an evening filled with yummy food, laughter, great coversation, and even a spontaneously combusting chandelier!  Yes, our chandelier caught fire during dinner. It was either the Holy Spirit moving through the room or a poor wiring job by a previous owner.  Your guess is as good as mine!  For the party, I took the opportunity to do a trial run for my "Eat, Drink, and Be Thankful" Thanksgiving Dessert Table.  For all the dessert table deails, please read below.

{Desserts} The dessert table started with a rustic Pumpkin Stack Cake. The cake is a modern update to the classic Appalachian Apple Stack Cake (a rustic staple from Kentucky).  For a traditional Apple Stack Cake recipe, try checking out the fabulous Bravetart's recipe.  This pumpkin version of a stack cake is made with pumpkin flavored cake, with pumpkin butter in between the cake layers.  I served it with cinnamon whipped cream.

The dessert table also included Maple Crème Cookies, homemade Mini Apple Blueberry Pies, Pumpkin Pie, and Caramel Apples. I also made Pumpkin Butter to send home with all of the guests.  The labels I used for the jars can also be downloaded for FREE.

{Decorations} In our formal living room, we have a beautiful fall landscaping by local artist, David Farmer. Since the painting was the focus of the dessert table, the other decorations were kept simple.  The colors of the printable party collection are based on the painting's colors.  Other elements on the table, included a framed printable party sign, gold spray painted acorns and pumpkins, and a burlap flower adorning the cake stand.  Jute twine was used to decorate the mason jars filled with pumpkin butter and to hang the candy jar tags.
